St. Lawrence and Anthony church in Wirek

The history of the Wirek Parish starts in 1856 when there was established a prison house with the St.Lawrence chapel. The chapel was used to celebrate the liturgy not only for the prisoners but also for the local inhabitants. Due to the dynamic development of the settlement dramatically increased the amount of the population living there thus the chapel soon became inadequate. In the years 1873-74, thanks tothe financial support of the count Donnersmarck, at the Nowary Street there was raised the first church in Wirek.

Soon that one also provedto be too small for the constantly growing amount of the believers thus as a result of it at the beginning of the next century it was decided to build a new church. The designing works were ordered with famous German architect Ludwig Schneider. The church was built in the years 1908-1909 in the neo-gothic style. Characteristic is the western part of the building worked out in form of a high tower with a clock.
